You’re planning to get a tattoo. The GGD (Public Health Service) finds it important to inform you in advance about certain potential risks. That’s why we recommend reading the relevant section on our website carefully at home to understand what the GGD wants you to know. Getting a tattoo involves puncturing the skin. To prevent the risk of infection with bloodborne diseases such as hepatitis B and C, it’s essential that proper procedures and equipment are used. In addition, poor aftercare or unhygienic practices—by either the tattoo artist or yourself—can lead to wound infections that may harm your health and negatively affect the appearance of your tattoo. 

If you are under 16 years old, getting a tattoo is strongly discouraged!

Mocht je niet in het bezit zijn van legitimatie, dan gaan wij er in goed vertrouwen van uit dat de wettelijke vertegenwoordiger die jij mee brengt naar de shop ook is wie hij of zij zegt te zijn. Wij zijn onder geen beding aansprakelijk voor fraude hieromtrent.

It’s important to eat and drink well and get plenty of rest before getting a tattoo.

During the tattooing process, ink and pigment are injected under the skin using small needles, creating a permanent design. These inks and pigments must meet strict safety standards, which are monitored by the NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority).

Before the tattoo is applied, the skin is cleaned and disinfected. If necessary, the area will be shaved using a new disposable razor. The tattoo must be applied as hygienically as possible. This means the needle used to pierce the skin must be new, come from a sterile package, and must not be touched with bare hands. The ink used must also be sterile and placed in small ink caps that are used for you only. To ensure this level of hygiene, the tattoo artist will prepare all necessary materials in your presence. At that time, the equipment will also be set up.

During the tattooing process, clean tissues are used and disposed of immediately after use. The tattoo artist wears gloves while applying the tattoo and changes them every time they touch anything other than the tattoo machine, a tissue, or your skin.

After your tattoo is applied, the tattooed area will be treated and covered. The workspace will be cleaned and sterilized, and all used materials will be properly disposed of.

On average, the healing period for a tattoo takes about 1 to 1.5 weeks. Of course, this also depends on your overall health and physical condition. Personal hygiene during the healing process is absolutely essential. Immediately after getting a tattoo, the tattooed area is covered with a sterile dressing, which can be removed after about 3 hours. **Important:** If the dressing sticks to the tattoo, do not pull it off. Instead, loosen it by soaking it with water in the shower or under the tap, and then gently remove it. The same method applies to any clothing that may be stuck to the tattoo.

We recommend wearing a cotton garment that covers the tattoo during the first 2–3 nights while you sleep. This helps prevent the tattoo from sticking to your bedding.

A freshly applied tattoo is comparable to an abrasion. It is very important to care for your tattoo properly. Your tattoo artist will provide you with both verbal instructions and this written information to help you care for your tattoo the right way. The wound caused by tattooing needs time and attention to heal properly. 

– By following these aftercare guidelines, your tattoo will heal properly and you'll achieve the best possible result:
– Avoid touching your tattoo with your hands as much as possible. 
– Wash the tattooed area once a day with water until the wound has healed.
– Gently pat the wound dry with a clean towel or tissue to ensure it stays dry — moist wounds can become infected! 
– Keep the tattoo as dry as possible. 
– Do **not** apply any ointment, Purol, Vaseline, or similar products to the wound. Only use ointment specifically recommended by your tattoo artist.
– Do **not** apply disinfectants such as Sterilon or Betadine to the wound. 
– Do not cover the tattoo with bandages or plasters. 
– Do not wear tight or dirty clothing over the wound. 
– During the healing process, avoid contact with swimming water, saunas, steam baths, tanning beds, and direct sunlight. Also, do not soak in the bath for extended periods.
– Once the tattoo is fully healed, apply a high-factor sunscreen before going outside.
– If you experience severe redness, swelling, bleeding, pus, discoloration of the wound, or pain, always contact your tattoo artist immediately and, if advised or needed, consult your general practitioner.

We are not responsible for improper care or failure to follow the advice we provide to everyone who gets a tattoo with us. We inform you both verbally and in writing that we would like to check the quality of your tattoo within 4 weeks after it has been applied. If, upon your return within that 4-week period, it’s clear that you have followed our aftercare instructions, we may offer a free touch-up if necessary. However, if you return **after** the 4-week period, any touch-up work will incur a fee.

We take great care throughout the entire tattooing process — before, during, and after applying your tattoo. During shop opening hours, feel free to call us with any questions you may have. In cases of emergency or urgent need, we have no problem being contacted outside of opening hours. We cannot offer any guarantee on color. Due to the presence of pigments in the skin, color changes may occur — every skin is different, after all. However, we only use approved inks and pigments to minimize this risk as much as possible. If certain inks are unlikely to be absorbed well by the skin, we will always discuss this with you beforehand. Color choices are made entirely at your own risk and responsibility. How well a tattoo heals and retains its appearance depends on how you care for it — that is your responsibility. We have provided you with all the necessary information above; it is up to you to carry out the aftercare correctly and carefully.

For 1.5 to 2 weeks, apply Bepanthen Tattoo Ointment 2 to 3 times a day. This ointment is available in our shop. It is completely normal for the tattoo to itch and for scabs or flakes to form during the healing process — they will fall off on their own over time. So, **do not scratch**!
